It is believed that there are a lot of Apple users have been screwed up by iOS 11 like me for there are many problems with iOS 11, for example, iPhone/iPad/iPod with iOS 11 is electricity-guzzling, unable to charge or easily get heated and etc. So when iOS 12 has been released, many users tend to update software to the latest iOS 12, hoping these problems can be figured out.
However, the truth is that you may also meet unexpected errors like "Software Updated Failed: An error occurred downloading iOS 12.2.5" when you are updating to iOS 12 on iPhone/iPad. So how to fix software update failed when upgrading to iOS 12? Let's see how to fix it together.
No matter you are going to fix iOS 12 "Software Update Failed" problem or it is the first time to upgrade iDevice to iOS 12, please make your iPhone/iPad/iPod get prepared for update or fix. Otherwise, your device may have "Software Update Failed" problem, gets stuck in "Verifying update" or other updating problems. Let's check the preparatory works you need to do at first.
#1. Ensure your iDevice is fully charged.
#2. Make sure your iOS device has connected to a stable Wi-Fi network/cellular data.
#3. Be sure your device have enough storage space to install the installation package of iOS 12.
#4. Please don't reset your device unless you have backed up your device data in advance.
#5. Make sure your iDevice supports to update to iOS 12. The iOS 12 supported devices includes:
iPhone - iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE;
iPad - 9.7" iPad, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro (9.7/12.9 the first & second generations, 10.5 inches), iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4;
iPod - Only iPod Touch 6.
You might have already tried to update to iOS 12 for several times but it works sometimes. When the error occurs, you might see the error popup appears on screen of iDevice with two options: "Close" and "Settings".
Step 1. Please tap "Close" button to exit the error messages and wait for a few minutes before reinstalling.
Step 2. Then you might unlock your iPhone/iPad/iPod, and go to "Settings" > "General" > "Software Update" to download and install the latest iOS 12 onto your device again.
(Note: If it is a new released iOS firmware to the public, the traffic jam of updating software could the most likely reason that Apple servers fail to keep up all requests, which making your device fail to upgrade to iOS 12. If so, you can wait for a few hours or days before trying again to avoid the rush hour traffic. Thus you might be successful to update to iOS 12.)
If you have installed iOS 12 beta on your iDevice, please delete the beta profile on your iPhone/iPad/iPod before you download the iOS 12 final version.
Step 1. To remove iOS 12 beta profile from your iOS device, please go to "Settings" > "General" > "Profile" on your device.
Step 2. Tap "iOS Beta Software Profile" > "Remove Profile" option to clear it from your device.
Step 3. Restart your device and then go to "Settings" > "General" > "Software Update" to download and install iOS 12 on your device again.

If the above solutions can't help you update to the latest iOS software, you can take full advantage of iTunes to update iDevice to iOS 12 on your computer (Windows PC/Mac).
Step 1. Install the latest iTunes on your PC and connect your iPhone to computer via a USB cable, then iTunes will automatically launch on your computer, if not, just open it manually.
Step 2. Click your iPhone icon on the left panel of iTunes when iTunes detects your device to manage your iPhone on iTunes.
Step 3. Click "Check for Updates" option on the right panel, and click "Download and Update" and enter your iPhone/iPad password if asked to install the latest iOS 12 onto the connected iPhone immediately.
To update to iOS 12, you can also manually download the iOS 12 IPSW file to update your iPhone/iPad/iPod. This allows you to fix the "Software Update Failed" problem while you don't need to contact Apple's server to download the firmware file. Now please follow the instructions as below to download and install iOS 12 using IPSW file.
Note: Before the process, please make sure you have backed up your data to iTunes to restore data from iTunes backup later in case of unexpected data lost.
Step 1. Download the iOS 12 IPSW files for your iPhone/iPad/iPod. Please download the right IPSW file according to your device model.
Step 2. Connect your device to computer via USB cable and launch iTunes.
Step 3. On iTunes window, please click "Summary" tab on the left panel.
Step 4. Then please hold the "Shift" key in Windows or "Alt/Option" key on Mac, and click "Restore iPhone" button on iTunes window.
Step 5. Then you might browse and select the iOS 12 IPSW file that you have downloaded just now. Then iTunes will start to install iOS 12 on your device immediately.
When the installation process is complete, you can restore data from your iTunes backup to get back your files.
