"Can't Be Opened Because It Is from an Unidentified Developer." This error occurs because macOS protects you from running potentially unsafe software. Learn how to safely open applications from developers not registered with Apple while maintaining your system's security.
Security Note: Only bypass this warning for applications you trust. Download software only from official sources.
macOS includes a security feature called Gatekeeper that helps protect your Mac from malicious software. By default, it only allows apps from the App Store or identified developers (those with a Developer ID certificate from Apple).
Method 1: Use the Context Menu (Recommended)
(1) Locate the application in Finder (usually in your Applications folder or Downloads);
(2) Right-click (or Control-click) on the application;
(3) Select "Open" from the context menu;
(4) When the warning appears, click "Open".
This grants a one-time exception to run the application.
Method 2: Adjust Security & Privacy Settings
(1) Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy;
(2) Click the "General" tab;
(3) Under "Allow apps downloaded from," you'll see a message about the blocked app;
(4) Click "Open Anyway" next to the warning message.
If you don't see the "Open Anyway" option in Security & Privacy settings:
Method 3: Use Terminal Command
(1) Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal);
(2) Type: xattr -d com.apple.quarantine;
(3) Drag the application from Finder into the Terminal window (this adds its path);
(4) Press Enter to execute the command;
(5) Now try opening the application normally.
Disabling Gatekeeper entirely is not recommended as it removes an important layer of security protection. Instead, use the methods above to make exceptions for specific applications you trust.
Tip: If you regularly use apps from unidentified developers, you can temporarily adjust Gatekeeper settings, but remember to restore them afterward:
(1) Open Terminal;
(2) Enter: sudo spctl --master-disable (enter admin password when prompted);
(3) To re-enable: sudo spctl --master-enable.
macOS Ventura (13+):

macOS Monterey (12):
