Why Doesn't Touch ID Work on iPhone?
There are several reasons to cause Touch ID not working on iPhone, one of the possible reason is for the sake of security on iOS device and Apple has updated the lock time of Touch ID recently. That means, when you do not enter any password (including keyboard password and fingerprint password) within 6 days and no fingerprinting is used within 8 hours, Touch ID will be temporarily disabled.
While the old version of the rule is that if you don't use a fingerprint to unlock the lock within 48 hours, you'll be forced to use the password to unlock it. (And few people will be found without a cell phone in 48 hours, and if you're bored now, try it.) In short, if you don't use fingerprint to unlock iPhone for a long time, you will need to enter your passcode to unlock it.
Well, there are some other possible reasons to make Touch ID fail to unlock iPhone, too. For example, the Home button is not clean and gets a lot of sweat stain, grease, water or other dust, which makes Touch ID insensitive or not working; or there are some software problem or hardware issue on your iPhone to cause Touch ID not working.
But please take it easy, you can easily fix Touch ID not working on iPhone with the following solutions. Let's go through the solutions from from easy to difficult.
You might have the similar experience that when you get your new iPhone, the Touch ID is so convenient and sensitive. However, after some time, Touch ID gets insensitive and even fails to work properly. This may be because the Home button gets a lot of sweat stain, grease, water or other dust. If you don't clean it up, it will be more and more insensitive.
To fix it, simply get a soft and moistened cloth to wipe it up gently. It is better to use cloth for cleaning glasses to clean your iPhone screen. And please make sure your finger or the Home button is dry and clean when you use Touch ID to unlock your iPhone.
You can try to reenter your fingerprint to fix Touch ID not working issue. In the older versions of iOS, Touch ID may forget fingerprint while the new iOS software updates has improved in iOS 11/10/9/8. But if your Touch ID does not work for unknown reason, you can try to re-register fingerprint on iPhone to fix it.
To do so, please enter your password to unlock your iPhone at first, then go to "Settings" > "Touch ID & Passcode" and enter your password. On the next screen, please swipe from the right to left on each fingerprint to delete fingerprints on iPhone. Then tap "Add a Fingerprint..." to reset Touch ID.
If there are some errors on Touch ID settings, Touch ID may also fail to work on your iPhone. You can try to reset all settings on iPhone to get it back to default settings and this Touch ID issue should be fixed after that. And resetting all settings on iPhone will not delete the data or contents on your device, but the saved fingerprints, Wi-Fi passwords and other user preference will be deleted after resetting.
To reset all setting on iPhone, please unlock your iPhone with password and then go to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > "Reset All Settings", then confirm your action to start resetting settings on iPhone. Your iPhone will be restarted after that, and you might now re-enter your fingerprint on your iPhone now.
If resetting all settings on iPhone cannot help you to make Touch ID recognize your fingerprint, you can factory reset your iPhone to fix Touch ID failure. Before going further, please remember to back up your iPhone data in advance for this will erase all data and settings from your iPhone.
To restore iPhone to factory default settings, please go to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > "Erase All Content and Settings" > enter your passcodes to verify your identify > tap "Erase iPhone" option. After that, you can restore from iTunes/iCloud backup to set up your device.
